GBL ( another substance that produces GHB in the body ) IS NOW LISTED as a schedule I controlled substance. 1,4 Butanediol is not listed but can be considered by the DEA as "a substance that can produce pleasure and therefore should be controlled." It is a balance between the good a substance can produce and its potential for abuse. For example, 1,4 could show up at a party in an unmarked jar where it is mixed with alcohol and other substances to produce a lethal combination, or, 1,4 could be used to divert millions of people from the use of alcohol - a big use for 1,4 in Europe.. Since 1,4 Butanediol has many uses - lube, cleaner, adhesive additive, food precursor, polymer cursor, diet supplement, etc. and 650 metric tons are made each year, and the body converts it into growth hormone, one can legally own it.  It is being investigated for use in alcohol and drug diversion, sleep disorder treatment, growth hormone replacement, and many other applications, but can not generally be sold for these purposes in the USA, although it is sold over the counter in many European countries.

Think about this...

GHB produced by 1,4 is present in ALL mammalian cells. Since zero tolerance policy says possession of ANY amount of a scheduled substance is a felony, every human being instantly became a criminal in March 2000 ( when GHB was listed ).

We've all been guilty of possession for years. Every man woman and child. Every human brain is loaded with scheduled substances such as Tryptamines, Tryptophans and Phenylalanines to name a few.

There are laws about how laws can be legally made. One states that substances that occur naturally in the body cannot be declared illegal drugs. Sensible, yes?

Does this deter The Holy Drug Inquisition?

In Summary, many companies are selling different types of growth hormone releasers in the United States. These amino acid and nutrient products help the body produce growth hormone, in varying amounts given their various chemical mechanisms, and usually without much pleasurable effect, accept in larger doses.  These programs range from physician growth hormone injections costing hundreds of dollars per month  to bottles of growth hormone supplement bought over the internet.

1,4  is legal to purchase, legal to possess, and legal to consume by yourself for yourself (please note the warnings and hazards). It is NOT a controlled substance.  Because of the potential for  abuse of 1,4 there are state regulations in some states prohibiting the sale to some one else for human consumption. The abuse has usually followed from overdosing to get more of the pleasurable effects  either knowingly or not. Some feel 1,4 a pleasurable natural non-patentable metabolite  is a threat to the alcohol (relaxing) and drug industry (sleep aid)?
